You can’t please all the people all of the time: Meeting different market expectations across Europe |
| Speaker: |
Dr Penny Moyle, CEO, OPP |
| Date: |
12-14 September 2012 |
| Location: |
Berlin, Germany |
| Synopsis |
The use of psychometric assessments in business has become mainstream in western economies. The MBTI assessment was initially used in the UK in ‘American English’ without adaptation. As the UK business market became more educated about psychometrics, demand arose for the instrument to be revalidated and standardised with appropriate UK population data.
The UK market now expects that a quality psychometric instrument will be underpinned by quality research, conducted using large and nationally-representative samples. Similar expectations exist in most northern European countries. In Southern and Eastern Europe, the use of psychometrics in business is less well-established and business customers are less demanding. Smaller, opportunistic research samples are often considered acceptable for validation.
This paper will describe approaches to creating translations and adaptations to meet market expectations in different countries. It will include lessons learned from attempts to impose higher psychometric standards in new markets and educating potential test users of the value of higher research standards. Experiences contrasting Poland and Serbia with the UK, France and the Netherlands will be discussed.

Free online psychometric tests; are they a disruptive innovation for the assessment industry? |
| Speaker: |
Dr Robert McHenry, Executive Chairman, OPP and Dr Penny Moyle, CEO, OPP |
| Date: |
12-14 September 2012 |
| Location: |
Berlin, Germany |
| Synopsis |
The trend to offering free online psychometric tests accessible through social networking sites is growing. One site that is currently offering good quality assessments free of charge has had over five million users in the past two years. This could be the beginning of what Clayton Christensen would term "a disruptive change" to the assessment industry. It could mean that the assessment industry will have to adapt from its current scarcity model of supply to an abundance model in the same way as he recorded music industry has had to do. The leaders of this discussion will present examples of popular assessment sites and sketch the disruptive possibilities for the industry.
